Golf Digest Taps Quivira as One of Mexico’s Top Courses
Quivira Golf Club, the spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature course etched across a splendid Land’s End site at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, has been selected among the “Best Golf Courses in Mexico” by Golf Digest.
“Mexico is a large country (it ranks 13th in the world in geographic size) with a large population (11th),” the publication stated. “Almost all the great golf, however, exists on its perimeters, in less crowded areas.”
Heading the list of these areas is the magical destination of Los Cabos, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. “The Cabo region is dry, desert golf and includes wild, rugged landscapes exemplified by courses like the Jack Nicklaus-designed Quivira Golf Club that moves from inland fields of cactus and arroyos to rocky headlands that drop sharply into the Pacific Ocean,” Golf Digest reported.
Opened to acclaim in 2014, Quivira is one of the most scenic and challenging resort venues in the hemisphere. Created as an exclusive amenity for guests of Pueblo Bonito Resorts, this bold risk-reward layout, marked by sheer cliffs, windswept dunes, and desert foothills, offers breathtaking drops from tee to fairway along with expansive sea views. In a dazzling locale renowned for its mountain-desert-ocean ecosystem, Quivira boasts more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos.
Presenting a firm but fair test from each set of tees, this 7,019-yard, par-72 tour de force may be the most compelling course Jack Nicklaus has ever built. Since its debut, Quivira has become a “bucket list” venue for discerning golfers from around the globe. Golf Digest’s recognition is further confirmation of Quivira’s excellence.
Complementing the layout’s appeal is the total golf experience offered by the all-inclusive club, which gives players multiple opportunities to refresh and fortify themselves.
For example, the comfort station beside the oceanfront practice facility, accessible before teeing off, offers snacks, beer, and tequila-based Bloody Mary’s, a.k.a. Bloody Maria’s.
Behind the tees at No. 6, perched 275 feet above the sea, the Cliffs comfort station awaits with ready-to-go refreshments, notably breakfast burritos in the morning. During the winter months, the Cliffs is a perfect perch from which to observe migrating humpback whales that spout and breach offshore.
The Oasis, a halfway house situated above the ninth green, showcases the culinary talents of the resort’s chefs. On an open-air patio high above the fairways and sea, players can enjoy fresh-off-the-grill regional Baja cuisine, from tacos to tostadas. The Oasis bar posts daily drink specials, many featuring top-shelf tequila.
Players can refresh themselves a final time at the Cañada comfort station at the 17th tee, which sits high above a broad concave fairway, the sea flooding the horizon far beyond the green.
Anchoring the club is a thatched-roof, beachfront clubhouse located between the first tee and the 18th green. This stylish gathering spot, with its large rectangular bar serving as a popular 19th Hole, sits a short distance from the rolling surf. The club’s golf shop features top apparel brands and logoed golf merchandise.
Open for breakfast, the Quivira Clubhouse offers omelets and chilaquiles served with green or ranchera sauce, a local favorite. Lunch is known for its juicy burgers, healthy salads, and superb fish tacos. Quivira Steakhouse, open for fine dining from late afternoon through evening, has cozy indoor seating as well as outdoor seating under the stars.
